How much does it cost to open a restaurant — situacion habitual en restaurantes

Opening a restaurant in Spain in 2026 costs between 80.000€ and 350.000€ depending on the size, location, and concept. But the figure that matters is not how much it costs to open — it's how much you need to bill to be profitable and how many months it takes to reach the break-even point. 60% of restaurants that close in the first year don't fail due to lack of customers, but because the initial investment was poorly calculated and the cash flow couldn't survive the ramp-up months.

  • You have a restaurant idea but you don't know how much you really need to invest
  • You've requested quotes from interior designers and builders but you don't have a comprehensive financial plan
  • You haven't calculated the break-even point or the months it will take to recover your investment
  • You think you can open a restaurant in Madrid with €50,000 (you can't)
  • You haven't researched the costs of licenses, permits, and procedures in your area
  • You have your own savings but haven't considered external financing or aid

If you recognize 2 or more of these situations, your restaurant needs a professional diagnosis.

The costliest mistake is not spending big on opening — but not setting aside 3-6 months of working capital to cover the ramp-up period until reaching break-even

FAQ

FAQ: how much does it cost to open a restaurant

How much does it cost to open a restaurant in Madrid in 2026?
Between 80,000€ (small format, peripheral area) and 350,000€+ (full-scale restaurant in a prime location). The real average in central Madrid is 150,000-250,000€. Includes: fit-out (800-1,500€/m²), equipment (20,000-60,000€), licenses/permits (3,000-15,000€), initial inventory (5,000-15,000€), and working capital (3-6 months of fixed expenses).
How much money do I need to have saved to open a restaurant?
At minimum, 30-40% of the total investment should be from own funds. The rest can be financed with ICO loans, credit lines, or investors. But in addition to the opening investment, you need a working capital buffer of 3-6 months (€20,000-50,000) to cover expenses while the restaurant isn't yet profitable. This is what entrepreneurs underestimate the most.
How long does it take to recover the investment in a restaurant?
The break-even point (the month you stop losing money) is reached between 8 and 14 months. The total investment recovery (ROI) typically takes 3-5 years with a well-managed business. If your financial plan shows a recovery of less than 2 years, it's probably too optimistic. If it's greater than 7 years, the business may not be viable.
Can ChefBusiness help me open a restaurant from scratch?
Yes. Our Restaurant Opening service covers everything from concept validation to the grand opening: feasibility study, business plan, location search, interior design project, license management, team selection, menu design, and launch plan. Everything starts with the Concept Diagnosis (from 1.350€).
